2009 Veterans Day Ceremony
November 7, 2009 by Bill Riley.
My wife and I had the privilege of attending this year’s Veterans Day Ceremonies at the National Navy UDT-Seal Museum near Fort Pierce, Florida. The Museum is located on Hutchinson Island, the historical birthplace of the United States Navy Frogman.
The crowd was full of ex-military from as far back as World War Two. For myself, I couldn’t have felt more humbled by being amongst some of the most giving human beings on the face of the earth. These are truly high caliber people.
The highlight of the ceremony was Captain Richard Phillips’ (second from right in photo) personal recount of the events around the capture of the Maersk Alabama by Somalian pirates this past year. Captain Phillips held the crowd in total silence as he described being chased by an old but fast wooden boat, getting boarded, and the experience of being held in one his own ship’s life boats in conditions liken to a “sauna bath.” Captain Phillips praised the expertise of the United States Navy and especially the Seal team who ultimately shot and killed his captors.
After the ceremonies, United States Seal Team Eighteen supported by Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Eleven from the USS Enterprise gave a demonstration of how Special Operations Forces arrive in a potentially hostile environment and deal with attacking forces. While explosions and ammunition s used today were not lethal, the noise provided a true sense of realism. I sure would not want to be one of the bad guys.

Here come the Good Guys - by land!

Here come the Good Guys - by air!

Getting the job done.

The job is finished - heading home.
